We’ve been looking for a compact/waterproof headlamp that we love, and our standards are pretty high.  That’s why we really dig the Petzl E-LITE ($30). Designed for deployment in harsh emergency conditions, it fits the bill perfectly for all of us crazy ass sailors that won’t even get out of bed unless it’s blowing something between a  Force 3 and a white squall. It is waterproof and compact, with great battery life. We are also big fans of the red light mode to preserve night vision, which is a must on those long night watches  under a new moon. Sailors should never be without the 100 dB built in whistle. It’s a lifesaver, should you find yourself in the drink in the middle of the night.  Plus, it isn’t limited to headwear. It can cinch around your wrist or neck, or attach to  thin objects, like lifelines, with the integrated clip.
